Dreaming....but could we?

Just for fun I've been talking to the builder of those beautiful homes I wrote about last week. Today he offered one of them for another $100k less. Hmmm, it's actually getting very tempting.

The Pros:
* Beautiful home with top notch quality finishes - stunning brick work, granite, tile, mouldings, fixtures, kohler faucets.
* Style is very much in tune with our style - think Tuscany.
* Deck off the kitchen, tile patio off the walkout basement.
* A dining room that could fit a china cabinet (our current dining room is only big enough for the table set).
* The kitchen and laundry room are to die for.
* Landscaping is already done since it was a spec house.
* Closer to our church.
* Same school system as where we live now.
* Now is the time to buy. I bet we could get him down another $50k.

The Cons
* The lot isn't as big as Tony would like. However we have a huge backyard right now and all he does is mow the grass. We don't have a deck or patio, so it's not like we are outside enjoying our big yard. I can see if we had kids - they could play baseball in our yard, but it will be years before we have kids playing baseball.
* Our house is not for sale. However, the houses in our neighborhood have actually sold very well this summer. In two weeks 5 houses went up for sale and sold. Unheard of in this market.
* The mortgage - would be pretty hefty. We'd be able to put down a large amount, but still, would we want to in Michigan where the economy is built upon the unstable automotive companies?
* Taxes - that city has a lot higher taxes than our township. Why can't that house be out here where we live? Because that house out here would not be going for so cheap. That's what is so funny - houses in our township are generally more expensive, but the taxes are 30% less than that city where the big house is.
* How much further is the housing market going to fall in Michigan?
* Dang I just got new drapes in 5 rooms a year ago! I don't know if I want to leave them!

We'll see what hubby says when he gets home tonight. He told me I could barter with the builder and he might be interested if the price came down. Well it came way down today, so we'll see, and since nothing much is happening on the donor front, I'm keeping busy by dreaming about these houses.

Nothing new on Tony's donor search - he hasn't accomplished much, but he left a message for the Donor Coordinator at our clinic. Hopefully she will call him today.

Tonight I'm having dinner with my friend Anne - Yeah!!! We are cooking at her house - chicken fajitas, salad, garlic bread, fresh raspberries and wine!

Have fun at dinner...sounds wonderful.

That house is very tempting, and with the pros and cons you listed, I'd be inclined to go for it, assuming you can manage the mortgage and taxes. Surely things can't get much worse in Michigan, right?

That's a toughie. With the state of the economy, I'm in a reduced risk sort of mind frame, I'd happily downsize right now if the market would allow, just so we could save more towards treatments.

But...it's probably one of the better times to buy and if you have stable jobs, savings, etc. it might be a good investment.

Okay, I'm no help. ;P

I think the market is going to have a further downturn from the increasing exodus from our area. From the things I'm hearing about various Oakland Co. and Macomb Co. businesses, I'd be very surprised if there wasn't a further reduction in new home prices. Of course, I could be wrong, but my gut is telling me otherwise.
