Follow up with RE

I just got back from our follow-up appt. with our RE. Can I just say that I absolutely adore my RE? He's just so cool, and nice, and patient! We dialed my husband in on conference call because he couldn't get out of work to attend in person. There was also a resident from Beaumont Hospital sitting in, which was fine with me. Dr. M went over the last failed IVF and also compared it to my first one which was at a different clinic. He said that although I responded better to the drugs and produced more follicles, in the end I still got the same number of embryos to transfer(yeah knew that, but it was good for hubby to hear). Dr. M explained all of our options and their associated success rates for a live baby. He adjusted the rates based on my actual performance in the IVFs.

Natural IUI - less than 1%
Clomid IUI - less than 3%
Injectibles IUI - less than 10%
IVF with my own eggs - less than 22%
Egg Donor - 60%
Adoption - 95%

I thought it was nice that he even discussed adoption, he wasn't trying to do a hard sell on his services. It was so cute, my husband even asked about using donor sperm. Dr. M explained that although he has male factor infertility, with the ICSI process they are able to "fix" the sperm issue. In our case the age of my eggs is the real culprit. I asked Dr. M to explain more about the donor process and costs and he did. Tony asked about issues like our child wanting to go find his/her biological mother 15 years from now. Dr. M explained that the donor process is completely anonymous and she can never know our names, nor can we know hers. He explained that we would meet with a social worker to discuss things like whether or not to tell the child, etc. He said that he and his wife had used a donor, but that he couldn't make the decision for us. He wanted to give us all of the statistics and information so we can decide what is best for us. He mentioned that there is a Resolve Talk on Friday night at Beaumont Hospital and they are doing a raffle for a free IVF cycle. Heck yeah I'll be there!

He actually already has a donor in mind who looks like me and she'll be ready to donate again this summer. She has donated twice before and both couples have gotten pregnant. She is 23, just graduating college, 5'5" (2 inches shorter than me, but that's ok), and well that's about all I know so far. I took home donor profile forms to fill out, but of course now Mr. husband and I have to have a talk and make a decision. Not sure how long that will take, but I'll keep you all posted!

I'm glad the doctor is taking time to talk with you and answer all of your questions. Sounds like you have a great one, even conferencing in your husband! How cool is it that your doctor used donor eggs, I would believe that makes him a little more empathetic. I hope you and your hubby come to a decision you are both comfortable with. And I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for that raffle at Beaumont for you!

Sounds like a good and productive meeting with the RE. Sounds like you are on the right track. Couldnt wish for more good things for you THAN I ALREADY DO! Can you put some sticky stuff on the raffle ticket with your name on it so when they reach into the hat, they pick yours ;)

What a great follow up visit with your RE. He's certainly given you a few things to think about. I'll be thinking of you as you work your way towards a decision.

Your RE sounds amazing. I agree with Sara - I think that the fact he used DE would make me trust him more.
So is Tony on board with DE? Or are you still discussing it?
Oh! And I hope you win the free IVF cycle!

Well, it sounds like you guys are making positive steps in a good direction...considering all your options. Your doctor sounds awesome!!!

Tony has some food for thought (well, I know you both do, but he takes a bit longer to digest, no?)

Good luck with the raffle! How awesome would that be???

It sounds like a great consultation. It's nice that your RE has first hand experience with the services he offers. Good luck with the decision making and the raffle!

A raffle! how cool is that! Hold onto that RE -- it's so important to find someone you like and trust and who seems to have an open mind and listen.

Good Luck!!!

A raffle? Wow...how can I get in on that?

Do you know much about the cost for DE? I have been casually researching it (read: scared of possibly the next step).

Sounds like a lot of progress was made in one visit. 60% odds aren't too shabby! I'm glad your husband was asking lots of questions. And I'm glad the doctor is patient and caring. Good luck at the raffle!

You've got one good RE! Sounds like he is really invested in what is best for you-and I so hope you win that raffle!

Your RE sounds fantastic.

Your chances with your own eggs also don't sound THAT bad. Many clinics in the UK only have that success rate.

Still, if donor is a more likely possibility then it does sound worth going down that road. Good luck with Tony. That was a breaking point for me and Mr G - he just couldn't go there. He was prepared to talk to third parties about it so i had some hope...

Good luck with your raffle...i'll have everything crossed for you! xx

I am so happy that you had that conversation. I know you haven't fully decided about DE yet, but it's really neat that there is a donor out there who kinda looks like you, is college educated, known to be fertile, etc.! I wouldn't worry about her being 2 inches shorter... for some reason unknown I am 4.5 inches shorter than my mom (me 5'5", her 5'9.5"), so it's definitely plausible for you to have a child who's a little bit shorter. Anyway, I'm excited for you guys, whatever you choose!

Thanks for your continued support on my blog. :)
