3 day transfer is set for tomorrow
Okay so Nurse Susan called me and said the doctor wants to proceed with a 3 day transfer tomorrow morning - have to be there at 10:45. At first I was all excited because that means my embryos have lived 2 days so far. However after reading about 3 day transfers on the web, now I am all worried that the doctors are transferring them just so they can get their money and not have to tell me if the embryos don't survive to 4 or 5 days. I don't know why I am looking at everything with such a negative twist.

I posted this on my blog too!
Kelly - definitely not. It is not uncommon to do a 3 day transfer. How many eggs did you have retrieved? Many, many babies are born after a 3-day transfer. Sometimes it comes down to quantity of embryos, sometimes it's just doctor's preference. I'm sure Dr. Fakih is making the best decision to increase your odds. He would cancel the cycle before transferring embryos that he didn't feel have a chance to make it...a cancel doesn't count against his success rate!
Hang in there.
Oh, I just re-read your blog. I think he is doing the 3-day transfer because of the number of embryos you have. With less embryos, they very, very often do a 3-day instead of a 5. Embryos thrive in their mama's bodies. With more embryos, they can "afford" to continue developing until 5 days because they have more to work with. Don't worry! All it takes is one!!!!
Embryos do better in utero than in vitro. I'm sure that he's just trying to give your 2 embryos the best possible chance of growing well. I think they wait until 5 days so that they can pick the heartiest ones if they have a lot to choose from, but with 2, I suspect that they just want to give them the best chance there is and don't want to risk losing them to being developed in vitro.
I had a successful day 3 transfer. I had 7 'beautiful' embryos and I think my doctor felt there was no reason to wait to day 5.
I think that as long as the embryos have the proper amount of cells, the day in which they're tranferred doesn't particularly matter. (although I'm likely to be wrong) (does that sound bad, I don't mean it to be, it just doesn't seem to make much of a difference as far as I'm aware in pregnancy rates)
Yeah, I agree with everyone else about wanting to give them the best chance possible, and that's why they're doing a day 3 transfer. Lots of babies are born from day 3 transfers. In fact, many labs don't even have the capability to culture the embryos for more than 3 days, so they only do day 3 transfers.
I'll be thinking lots of good thoughts for you tomorrow!
