Tarzan and I spoke last night about surrogacy: do we go with an agency, or indy, what do we do next, etc. He said he just wants to see what surrogates are out there. I told him that an agency isn't just going to send us a ton of profiles to window shop. They may send us one or two, but if we just want to "see who is out there" we need to respond to ads from independent surrogates and we need to place our own ad. I said first we need to look at the pros and cons of going with an agency versus independent.
Agency - they do all the legwork, find a surrogate, handle the contract, handle the money, hook all parties up with lawyers, handle the medical and psych screening, etc. For first time IPs (Intended Parents) like us, going with an agency would take a lot of the stress out of it. However all that costs about $15k for their services plus what you have to pay the surrogate you could be looking at $50k.
Independent - we have to do all of the legwork, come up with a contract, find lawyers, figure out medical and psych screening, plus find a surrogate. The pro is that we would save at least $15k.
Tarzan thinks for now he wants to go Indy, but we'll see. He then asked for my help to do so. Erin - if nothing else Tarzan is consistent! haha. I went onto surromomsonline.com and marked a bunch of ads that I want to respond to. I'm going to create a new email address today and start responding to them. I'll also post our own ad and see what we get.

Smile. Big smile.
Wow - this is exciting! I think if you have the energy going Indy is a great idea, not only saving $$ but you are super involved in the process. I really felt like I was just "along for the ride" during the first couple IVFs I did, which looking back makes me feel disappointed with myself. Good luck whatever you decide!
I am with you all the way and praying for you in your search. Love Mom
Soooo....have you decided yet. This is so exciting. I think I agree wtih musicmakermomma. You seem like you'd be good with managing all that stuff and saving the money. You are a professional project manager after all! ;)
Piece of cake and definitely worth 15K.
So excited for you Kelly!
And BTW, Tarzan totally reminds me of Mike. i.e. "KC I really think "WE" should look into refinancing our mortgage. Can you call and check on that tomorrow?"
